- OOTI Lustrum Symposium + Event
Date: 26-03-2009
The Software Technology Programme celebrates its 20th anniversary
with a symposium:
“System Architecture: between clouds and dust”
On Thursday March 26, 2009 in the Auditorium at the TU/e campus, Eindhoven
We celebrate the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Software Technology (ST) post-masters programme with a symposium that aims to reflect the scope of the domains where software architecture plays a key role. On the one extreme there are the very large systems, with a high capacity based on Clouds, or grids, or with a large
extension such as the Lofar telescope. On the other extreme there are systems the size of a speck of dust that can unobtrusively monitor conditions in the human body or the environment. In this symposium we discuss the range of successful architectures and the reasoning that underlies them.
The Software Technology programme started in 1988 as one of the post-master’s designer programmes of the Stan Ackermans Institute (SAI) of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). These programmes were initiated by the Dutch government in response to the cry from the Dutch industry for technical professionals who were
capable of dealing with the increasing complexity of new products, processes and systems. Over the years the ST programme has produced 300 graduates.

- Lecture by Mr. Andy Pimentel on Daedalus
Date: 22-02-2008 from 18:30 h until 22:30 h

On Friday 22 February 2008 XOOTIc organizes its next XLC Lecture. Mr. Andy Pimentel of Universiteit van Amsterdam will give an XLC Lecture entitled “Daedalus: Making System-level Design Take Off”.
Daedalus is a system-level design flow for the design of multiprocessor system-on-chip (MP-SoC) based embedded multimedia systems. It offers a fully integrated tool-flow in which design exploration, system-level synthesis, application mapping, and system prototyping of MP-SoC architectures is highly automated. The entire Daedalus design flow, from sequential application to an implemented MP-SoC system on an FPGA with a parallelized application mapped onto it, can be traversed in only a matter of hours. This provides ample opportunities for quickly experimenting with different MP-SoC architectures during the very early design stages. As a consequence, this should lead to better designs, and maybe more importantly, it should also result in radically shorter design times. Recently, a team of OOTIs has significantly improved the user friendliness of Daedalus. Given the fact that Daedalus is open-source software, this should open the way to world-wide deployment of the framework.
In this presentation, I will provide an overview of the Daedalus design flow, discussing both Daedalus’ core tools as well as the supporting software infrastructure that has recently been developed by the team of OOTIs. Moreover, I will also indicate the immense potential that the Daedalus technology provides in an industrial or SME context.
- X-Day Sailing weekend
Date: 28-09-2007 until 30-09-2007 at 20:00 h
As announced earlier, this year we will organize a slightly different
sailing event. We will of course go on the water, but this time on a big
boat, and with a professional skipper. You can actively participate in
sailing the ship together with the skipper, who will teach you how to
operate the halyards, the sheets, the winches, and even steer the 36 meters
of steel and wood (www.nil-desperandum.nl).
We will make trips on the Waddenzee (the sea up in the North of the
Netherlands) and visit (some of) the Wadden Eilanden (Coastal Islands). The
boat has 28 beds, central heating, showers, a big kitchen / dining room,
and even a filled beer cooler. There is a possibility to cook our own meals
on board, which we might do as a group activity.
Max. 28 participants. There could be some additional costs for dinner & transportation.
Location: Waddenzee (departure: Stavoren)

- Xootic Lecture
Date: 25-05-2007 at 18:30 h
Given all kinds of recent developments in the world of industry and academia, TU/e has been working on improving the OOTI program. During this XOOTIc Lecture, Harold Weffers will not only present the current concept of the 2007-2009 program but he will also try and get valuable feedback and suggestions from the alumni community. One essential difference between the current program and the new concept is the fact that our PDEng trainees will undergo an integral approach to system architecting and designing software for multiple application domains in the high tech industry.
Programme of the evening:
18:30h Welcome reception at Academisch Genootschap
19:00h Dinner (costs: EUR 5,--)
21:00h Lecture by Harold Weffers
22:30h Drinks

- Lecture by Kees van Overveld
Date: 01-02-2007 at 18:30 h
Subject: "Models: Cinderella in the world of the scientists"
Abstract:
Scientists and technologists in all disciplines constantly use models of all sorts. The use of models is an indissoluble part of the daily work,
but little attention is paid in formal education as to, exactly, what constitutes a model and what types of models do exist, which sorts of models should be used in what circumstances, and, most importantly: what are the do's and don't with models. Part of the lecture will be a more or less philosophical reflection on these and similar questions; if time permits, we extend the scope of our little excursion to the realm of daily life where the peculiarities of models affect even mundane activities such as talking, reading or watching television.
Programme:
18:30h Welcome reception
19:00h Dinner
21:00h Lecture by Kees van Overveld
22:30h Drinks
Location: Trafelgar Pub (Dommelstr 11, Eindhoven)
